 Много птиц вернулось с юга в свои края. Весна позвала их на родину, чтобы песнями радовать людей, для них, долго ждавших тепла, радостен даже грачиный крик, а уж от сквор-чиного пения душа улыбается, жаворонок зовет ее в поднебесье своим величаньем весны. Но нет, вот еще как может повернуть зима, что мороз ударит, и снег повалит на землю, и поземка заметет очистившиеся дороги, пока не пролетели последние птицы, те, которые последними пролетают осенью на юг, до морозов, до ледостава почти остаются на севере, надеясь на возврат тепла, — это журавли и гуси.
 Пустынно без их косяков небо, и без кличей их не полна еще весна песнями. Вот полетят они, потянутся к далеким северным краям и прокричат, что не быть уже холодам, не вернуться льду на озера и реки, что будет им где отдохнуть в перелете, а пока на малых лужах крупной птице ни от лисы хитрой, ни от волка не спастись, и человек, жадный до легкой поживы, может нанести урон водоплавающей стае.
 Вот потому-то и не видно в небе журавлей, гусиных клиньев, не видно лебединых стай. Только с ними настоящая весна установится на земле. После них можно будет лететь и всем мелким птичкам, самым теплолюбивым: кукушке, ласточкам, стрижам и соловью, но эту мелочь не увидишь в небе, можно по мельканию в воздухе да по пенью узнать, что и эти прилетели вершить дела весны.
